Regarding our conversation about MSB training for the Master Naturalists in Burnet County… I think this is a great idea and we are so happy that folks want to help. This is what we usually do:

An 8-hour training that we will come to you to provide. The 8 hours consists of 4 hours of classroom information and 4 hours of outdoor application and training. We can do this any number of ways, depending on your folks' schedules and needs. Our most recent training, for the Guadalupe NPSOT chapter, consisted of 3 hours of classroom information on a Friday evening, from 6-9 pm. I've attached the handout and agenda from that training for your review.

This was followed by a Saturday morning, 8-12, outdoor experience. During that time, we collected herbarium specimens, went over the process of filling out datasheets, collected seeds and determined seed quality. We also taught folks how to use a GPS unit.

We will provide plant presses and press supplies, field magnifiers, and 1-3 GPS units. We will also develop a target plant list for the group to collect.

What we need from your group to do the training are:

People: we try to limit each training to 20 people at a time. This way we can ensure that everyone has a great experience and folks feel like they get personal attention. If there are more than 20 people who want to train, we can offer a second training.

A place to hold the outdoor component. In the past, we have relied on members of the groups who have property that they are willing to allow us on to train. I think you said that Marvin might be willing to let us access his property. Minnette Marr has been working with him, so I'm thinking it won't be a problem.

And, of course, a date.

I think that's everything. Please don't hesitate to contact either via phone or email with any questions. We're looking forward to working with you to get the Edwards Plateau flora into the Millennium Seed Bank at Kew.
